Our Membership
The California Coalition for Sheriff Oversight (CCSO) is made up of representatives from oversight bodies and grassroots organizations in counties that have, are working toward, or have organized community support for having civilian oversight of their county’s Sheriff’s Office.
Our Values
- Help one another to build and maintain effective oversight in our respective counties and statewide.
- Support oversight of county Sheriff’s offices and law enforcement at all levels.
- Respect our different backgrounds and perspectives, and value diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility.
- Uplift our shared mission.
- Collaborate to build consensus in decision-making among coalition members.
- Engage, lift up and empower directly impacted communities, including historically disenfranchised and under-represented people.
Our History
In March 2023, members of several county advocacy groups and coalitions working to enact effective independent civilian oversight of Sheriff’s offices began meeting monthly to share ideas and learnings. In June 2024, we hosted a public launch with a panel of experts and 173 attendees from 26 of the 58 California counties.
CCSO Meetings
We meet monthly via Zoom. Participation is welcome from all California organizations, coalitions, and individuals working on oversight who want to collaborate and learn together to support the mission of effective independent civilian oversight of Sheriff’s Offices.
